To prevent a lot of the stress that can come with adopting a puppy, here are some tasks you can do to avoid mishaps and be ready for anything:

  • Limit the accessible space for the pup until it’s done some training, particularly when it’s at home unsupervised. You can do this by blocking staircases and doorways with baby gates, putting it in an indoor puppy playpen, or using a kennel.
  • Stock up on a chewing deterrent spray – bitter apple, white vinegar, or a cayenne pepper solution works great for most puppies. Use this spray on cords, finishings, furniture, shoes, clothing, books, or other items that have become attractive chew toys for the puppy. Make sure you also provide appropriate items for chewing. Pig ears, Kongs, raw meaty bones, and bully sticks are some options that most dogs love.
  • Decide where you want the puppy to sleep and make sure it’s in a low-traffic area. A cozy dog bed can be placed in the corner of a room, under a table, or just in their kennel out of the way. The important thing is that your puppy will feel safe in this spot and be able to get an uninterrupted nap when needed.

Having a puppy at home is so much fun but also a lot of work. Our puppy training classes in Brentwood are a terrific strategy to prepare and make the most of this time.
